A man has died after being struck by a bus on the A1 in Northumberland.
He was declared dead shortly after emergency services arrived at the scene south of Haggerston Castle at about 05:00 GMT.
Northumbria Police said it believed the pedestrian, who was in his 30s, was on the road when he was hit as the vehicle travelled on the northbound carriageway.
The road was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
The man's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.
The driver of the bus remained at the scene and is assisting officers with their inquiries.
Sgt Steven Chappell said the investigation was in its early stages with police "doing all we can to better understand what led such a tragic incident occurring".
