City unveils tourism drive to boost economy

A new independent tourism board has been established for Peterborough to promote its cultural, historic and natural attractions.

The board said it would try to attract more visitors by creating a new visitor hub and film office, and has also unveiled a new strapline - "More than you imagine…".

The move has been welcomed by Peterborough Civic Society. Some residents have, though, suggested that the city does not have much to offer visitors and could benefit from greater investment and infrastructure.

Hindu temple feels let down over sale of site

Members of a city's Hindu community said they felt let down after news their temple site could be sold by a council to help balance its budget.

The Bharat Hindu Samaj on Rock Road was established in the New England Complex in Peterborough in 1986.

The site is owned by Peterborough City Council and its sale forms part of the authority's ongoing efforts to reduce debts.

Its cabinet member for finance, Labour councillor Mohammed Jamil, said the preferred bidder would retain existing tenants.

Charity 'moved' by donations after storm hits hike

A charity forced to cancel its fundraising walk for a second year running due to extreme weather said it was "deeply moved" by people who still donated, raising some £20,000.

About 420 walkers and 90 volunteers were expected to take part in the Sue Ryder Starlight Hike at Ferry Meadows on 4 October.

However, the charity called off the event, which featured a 5km (3.1-mile) and 10km (6.2-mile) route, after predicted strong gusts from Storm Amy.

It had hoped to raise £41,000 through the walk.

Romanian Orthodox church to buy listed building

The Grade I-listed church has been closed since 2022

A church that has been closed for the last three years could be re-opened and used for worship by Romanian Orthodox Christians.

The Church of St Augustine on Oundle Road requires about £300,000 of repairs.

The Diocese of Ely, which had been negotiating with other denominations to take on the church, said it was "delighted" with the takeover plan.

NHS trust celebrates 25 years of Filipino nurses

Angelo Cuenca was 23 years old when he first came to work at Peterborough Hospital

A local NHS trust is celebrating 25 years since the arrival of its very first cohort of Filipino nurses.

Angelo Cuenca, Inocencia "Lynie" Gazo and Retchel Serofia are among the 34 pioneering nurses who left the Philippines to join what is now the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust (NWAFT) in 2000.

Mr Cuenca has since become a Macmillan radiotherapy specialist nurse in Peterborough and said the city had become his "home".

He is among nine members of the original cohort still working for the trust, who will be honoured at a party in early November.

City council party leaders have united in condemning the racist and Islamophobic abuse faced by a councillor.

Peterborough City Council leader Shabina Qayyum said her Labour colleague Mohammed Jamil had been targeted with online and email abuse over the potential sale of a council asset.

Meanwhile, the council was handed almost £1m by government to help tackle rough sleeping as winter approaches.

Separately, it planned to expand its drug and alcohol treatment services through a new £13.4m contract.

Work to repair the reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac) at the city's town hall will begin this month, at a cost of around £900,000.

And there are also hopes "eyesore" metal fencing will be removed from its 17th Century Guildhall.
