An 18-year-old man and two teenage girls have been arrested after two police officers were assaulted.

The incident took place at about 17:00 GMT on Thursday on the Broadway, in Thatcham.

One officer was treated in hospital for injuries to her hand and has since been discharged. The other officer suffered a fractured leg and he remains in hospital, said Thames Valley Police.

The altercation started after a teenager was arrested following reports of a moped being damaged in the area.

The 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl, both from Thatcham, were arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

A 15-year-old girl, also from Thatcham, was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order and criminal damage.

Both girls have been released on police bail and the man remains in police custody.

Police said the assaults took place after two neighbourhood officers were flagged down by a member of the public who reported that his moped had been pushed over and damaged.

The officers arrested a teenager on suspicion of criminal damage but the teen "became obstructive", said the force.

"Another man became involved and an altercation ensued," it said, adding that the teenager had since been "de-arrested in connection with the incident of criminal damage".

Det Insp Bill Sykes said: "This incident occurred outside a coffee shop and we are aware that members of the public witnessed this incident take place."

He appealed for anyone with information to contact the force.
