Planning permission has been granted for a new road in Bishopbriggs aimed at cutting congestion and helping local businesses.

There Westerhill Development Road will involve 2km of new/upgraded carriageway between the existing Westerhill Road and the A803 Kirkintilloch Road.

The route will connect an upgraded Torrance roundabout and Lochgrog roundabout, and include the replacement of a section of Crosshill Road.

Funding for the project will come from the local authority's city deal place and growth programme, which will also involve improvements in Bishopbriggs town centre.

The £44.35m programme is supported by the UK and Scottish governments through the Glasgow city region city deal.

An additional allocation of £7.5m for the road was approved in principle by the council in June. It was previously referred to as phase five of the Bishopbriggs Relief Road.

The new route incorporates part of a former RAF Bishopbriggs base, which was once a World War II barrage balloon depot and has now been identified as development land.

Consideration has been given to preserving any archaeological remains which are found.

Plans for the road also include a new active travel route for walking, wheeling and cycling, with provision for future bus stops and an acoustic fence to reduce noise along part of the route.

The project is due to be completed in 2027/28.
