The theft of lead from the roof of a landmark crooked church spire is "destroying part of its unique history", police have said.
Derbyshire Police launched an appeal over the weekend after thieves stripped lead from the roof of St Mary and All Saints Parish Church, in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, between the evening of 26 September and morning of 28 September.
A force spokesperson said as well as the historical impact, the damage will cost "thousands to replace which diverts funds away from the community".
Inquiries are ongoing, and police are now urging anyone with information to come forward to prevent the church from "selfish acts of criminality".
