Leeds City Council said it wanted to cut journey times on South Accommodation Road

A 24-hour bus lane could be created on one of Leeds' busiest routes to help passengers get into the city centre more quickly.

Services on South Accommodation Road, which runs into Leeds from Hunslet, can take up to 20 minutes to travel 0.3 miles (500m) during the busiest times, Leeds City Council said.

The proposed bus lane is part of a package of measures put forward by the council to ease congestion on the road, with traffic lights possibly introduced on part of the Atkinson Street roundabout.

Pedestrian and cycle crossings on Atkinson Street would also be relocated, under the plans.

The council said the changes would be expected to cut journey times for all vehicles.

A public consultation on the scheme has started and will be open until 14 October.

Deputy council leader Jonathan Pryor said: "This scheme is another important step towards creating a transport system that reduces congestion, prioritises efficient bus travel and is part of our ongoing work to support sustainable travel, and make it easier for people to get around the city.

"We urge everyone that uses this route - whether you walk, cycle, drive, or take the bus - to take part in the consultation and share your views."
