Firefighters tackle blaze at derelict hotel

Fire crews were sent alongside police officers and paramedics to the scene

About 70 firefighters have been involved in tackling a large blaze at a former hotel in West Yorkshire.

A total of 10 crews were sent to the Durker Roods Hotel site on Bishops Way in Meltham at about 16:15 BST on Tuesday, according to West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Nobody was believed to have been injured in the incident, a fire service spokesperson said.

Andy Rose, incident commander, said: "Our fire investigations teams are currently working with West Yorkshire Police and local intelligence to try and determine how the fire started."

The blaze was on the second floor of the building, Mr Rose said.

At its height, about 70 firefighters were involved, using large jets and breathing apparatus to tackle the flames.

However, the fire service said that number was decreased later on Tuesday evening once the blaze was extinguished.

Emergency services were expected to stay in the area for some time while the investigation into the fire's cause continued, a spokesperson added.
