A man has been charged with the attempted murder of a police officer by hitting him with a stolen car in Edinburgh.

Lewis Mackie, 21, allegedly struck the officer in Dumbryden Gardens, in the Wester Hailes area, on Friday night before fleeing the scene.

The officer was taken to hospital for treatment but was released before the car was found abandoned.

Mr Mackie, of Edinburgh, made no plea to charges of assault to injury and the danger of life and attempted murder when he appeared in private before the city's sheriff court.

He also faces charges of theft and a number of road traffic offences, including failing to stop, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

Mr Mackie was remanded in custody and will appear again within eight days.
