A couple have returned to the seaside town where they went on their honeymoon for the 55th time since their wedding.

Sue and Trevor Sherman, who live in Northamptonshire, have visited Weston-super-Mare every year since their marriage on March 14, 1970.

They celebrate their emerald anniversary on Friday and told the BBC of their love for the town.

Mrs Sherman, who was born in Weston, said she had many fond memories of the town, including seeing the Rolling Stones there as a teenager in 1964. It would "always feel like home" because the people were so kind and friendly, she said.

When asked how their relationship had endured the test of time, Mrs Sherman said she had no idea, but was sure "that gin helped".

Her husband said the first time he ever set foot in Weston was 55 years ago for their honeymoon.

"I love the area, I love the piers. Sue's got a real thing for Birnbeck Pier, which is being refurbished now, and that is an absolute joy for her that it's getting refurbished".

Mr Sherman added that he loved the whole area: "Anywhere from Uphill to Sand Bay, all of it, I love it all."

Every year they visit the town, they go to all of their usual haunts, with Mrs Sherman joyfully insisting their trips are "so dull".

She added: "We walk along the prom and go to Marine Lake.

"There's always something to do in Weston and, if not, walk along the prom and you'll find somebody lovely to talk to."

This year, the couple made their journey to Weston-super-Mare on Thursday and met relatives for a tea party before spending the night at The Royal Hotel.

Then, to mark the day of their 55th wedding anniversary, they will walk along the pier to Anchor Head, followed by supper at the Olea restaurant.

The Shermans said they would then reflect on their many years of marriage, and "count their blessings".

Weston had contributed to their happiness, they said, thanking people for the "real kindness" the town had shown to them over the years.
