One person was rescued after a fire broke out at a building in Sunderland.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service was called to Fawcett Street in the city centre, at about 18.30 GMT on Monday.

The other occupants of the building, which is residential and commercial, managed to get out before crews arrived.

Northumbria Police and the fire service have launched a joint investigation into how the blaze started.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said the person was rescued after being given "fire survival guidance" on the phone by its control room.

"Thankfully all other occupiers self-rescued before our arrival," they added.

Three appliances were sent to the scene, and crews left at about 19.20 GMT.
