Seven dogs, thought to have been used for breeding, have been found dumped in a rural spot in Oxfordshire.

Local residents alerted police after finding the dogs abandoned in the countryside in the Wantage and Grove area.

Wantage Grove & Faringdon Neighbourhood Team at Thames Valley Police said quick thinking and compassionate residents managed to round up the dogs and keep them safe until officers arrived.

The force said the dogs, which had possibly been "used for puppy farming", had been taken to be checked over by vets before efforts were made to find them new homes.

Thames Valley Police praised the residents for taking action to rescue the dogs.

The force said the "community showed just how incredible they are. Thank you to everyone who stepped up - you've made a real difference."
