Christmas lights events across East Yorkshire

Hull's Christmas lights will be switched on on Thursday 20 November

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas as the region starts to light up for the festive season.

The Christmas lights in Hull will be switched on between 17:30 and 19:00 GMT on Thursday 20 November at Queen Victoria Square.

Councillor Rob Pritchard, Hull City Council's portfolio holder for culture and leisure, said: "We know the event will inject energy and footfall, giving a huge boost to our local businesses while creating a truly magical, memorable atmosphere for everyone - residents and visitors alike."

From town centre lights switch-ons to Christmas markets and entertainment, here are some of the events to get us into the festive spirit.

Beverley: The Flemingate Shopping Centre Christmas lights switch-on event will take place on Friday 14 November at 17:00 with entertainment and a fireworks display. The lights will be switched on at 18:45. Part of Armstrong Way will be closed to traffic from 11:00 to 22:00 with diversions in place.

Hull: The free family-friendly Christmas event on 20 November will include special guests and performers on the balcony of City Hall.

On Saturday 29 November between 10:00 and 16:00 and on Sunday 30 November between 11:00 and 16:00 there will be a number of Christmas events in the city centre including a Christmas market, entertainment and a Victorian Market (Saturday only).

Hull Trains are working with Visit Hull to offer free travel to and from Hull from Doncaster, Selby, Howden and Brough on selected services in November and December.

Pocklington: The Christmas festival is on Sunday 23 November from 13:00 to 19:00 and includes the Christmas lights switch-on.

Goole: There will be a Christmas market at The Courtyard on Boothferry Road on Sunday 23 November between 10:00 and 16:00.

The town's Christmas lights switch-on event was cancelled due to safety fears over construction work taking place at the same time.

Driffield: The Driffield Christmas lights switch-on and market will take place on Friday 28 November at the Market Place. The lights will be switched on at about 19:00.

Hessle: The Christmas lights switch-on will take place on Friday 28 November at Hessle Square, The Weir and Prestongate from 16:30 to 19:30. The Christmas tree lights will be switched on at 16:30.

Hornsea: The Hornsea Christmas lights will be switched on at 18:30 on Friday 28 November at Newbegin. There will be a road closure in place at Newbegin from 17:00 to 21:00 between Southgate and Cliff.

Bridlngton: The Christmas lights switch-on will take place on Sunday 30 November at 17:30 on King Street/Manor Street.

Cottingham: There will be a Christmas festival on Sunday 30 November from 10:00 to 16:30, which also sees the switching on of the Christmas lights.

Howden: There will be a Christmas market on Thursday 4 December at Howden Shire Hall at Market Place with stalls, a Santa's grotto and a brass band. The event will take place between 16:00 and 20:00.

Withernsea: There will be a Christmas market in and around Valley Gardens on Saturday 6 December. The pop-up market on Memorial Avenue will start at 12:00 and there will be entertainment in Valley Gardens from 19:00.

Market Weighton: The Christmas tree switch-on will take place on High Street on Sunday 7 December from 16:00 to 19:00.
