An island in Dorset will be closed at the weekend due to strong winds being forecast as Storm Amy approaches.

People will not be able to visit Brownsea Island, in Poole Harbour, on Saturday and its Community Open Day has been postponed, a statement on the National Trust website said.

However, the statement, external went on to say "we hope to re-open as normal on Sunday, 5 October".

The Met Office has issued amber and yellow weather warnings across many parts of the UK this weekend, with the south coast being most affected by adverse weather on Saturday.

Wind gusts could reach 60-65 mph along some exposed coasts in the south, the forecaster added.

The yellow warning in place for the south also means there could be power cuts, travel disruption and particularly dangerous conditions near coasts until Sunday.

According to BBC Weather, Dorset is expected to turn progressively windy with spells of blustery rain moving in from the west on Friday.

On Saturday, the weather will be windy but these winds should ease when Sunday arrives.

The island is popular with visitors as it has woodland, heathland and a lagoon filled with wildlife, such as red squirrels and a different types of birds, such as kingfishers, common and Sandwich terns and oystercatchers.
