Police officers were targeted with fireworks during a disturbance overnight.

West Midlands Police said it was responding to reports of "groups of people launching fireworks at each other and neighbouring buildings".

The force said a dispersal order had been put in place in parts of central Birmingham after two people were injured during the disorder.

It happened in the area Bagot Street and Staniforth Street at about 02:00 GMT.

"We will be taking action against anyone involved in public order offences or any other criminality that is reported to us," a police statement said.

Ambulance crews and firefighters also attended the area, which is popular with students.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was called to the scene twice in quick succession, with paramedics sent at 03:10 and 03:55.

"A woman was treated for minor injuries before being given self-care advice and discharged at the scene," a statement said.

"We then received a second call to the same location and again sent an ambulance to the scene.

"A woman was assessed by ambulance staff but did not require hospital treatment and was discharged at the scene."
