A police force has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after a teenage motorcyclist was seriously hurt in a crash with a car.

Derbyshire Police said a motorcycle and a Vauxhall Corsa were involved in a collision in London Road, at the junction with Midland Road, in Derby, at 22:40 BST on Monday.

The force said the motorcycle was seen by officers before the crash.

The IOPC said it was assessing whether further action may be required.

The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and has been released on bail, officers said.

The teenage motorcyclist remains in hospital.

A police spokesman said: "The force has notified the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to the motorcycle being sighted by officers prior to the incident.

"A referral will be made in due course."

A spokesperson for the IOPC said: “We can confirm we have received a referral from Derbyshire Constabulary in relation to this incident and we are now carrying out an assessment to determine what further action may be required from us.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the force.
