Cold-calling rogue roofers 'stole £8,000 from city's elderly'

Rogue roofers targeting a city's elderly residents have stolen almost £8,000 in recent weeks, police have said.

Lancashire Police said "in the last few weeks", cold-callers from a roofing company had contacted Preston residents to offer their services.

The force said the firm took payment in advance in cash and subsequently "carried out poor work".

Insp Dave Byrne said police advice was "to always say no to cold-callers".

“Rogue traders may use intimidating or aggressive behaviour to prey on our most vulnerable residents, often conning them out of large sums of money for unnecessary or shoddy workmanship," he said.

"If you need a job doing, get at least three written quotes from reputable businesses and agree a price and the work to be done in writing before going ahead.

"Research the companies you are looking to use... ask for references and look online."

He added that legitimate companies "will rarely ask for payment up front" and anyone with concerns should contact the force.
