Surrey Police has received reports of disturbances to seals resting along the River Thames

Surrey Police has issued a warning against seal "disturbances" along a stretch of the River Thames.

The force said its rural crime team has received several reports recently of members of the public approaching and disturbing resting seals.

PC James Wright said the marine mammals' presence is "too often met with hostility".

"These wild animals simply want to rest, feed and live peacefully in their natural environment," he said.

Repeated disturbances "cause significant stress", he said, adding: "In some cases, there have even been threats made against seals."

Anyone who sees a seal being harmed is asked to contact police.
