Meet Bill, the 80-year-old sweeping his own street
- Published
A retired man has "made such a difference" after taking the decision to tidy up a street in Nottingham, according to a parent.
Former site manager Bill Robinson first got his wheelbarrow, broom and shears out a year ago to clean up Wells Road in St Ann's.
Mr Robinson, 80, said he did not want recognition for his ongoing community clean-up work.
But after noticing his work while on the school run, he now gets help once a week from Dominic Talbot, who described his endeavours as "amazing".
Mr Robinson said: "I do as much as I can, clearing up, making things tidy, clearing away the mud and mess on the road, and the trees that keep falling.
"There's a lot of mess.
"I do it to help my neighbours. A lady said just this morning 'you've made a smashing job, I'm really pleased with it'."
He added: "It makes me feel good. I don't want any recognition or recompense, I'm pleased and happy to do what I can do."
Mr Talbot, 27, said he loved helping Mr Robinson with his work and had signed the pair up to Nottingham City Council's Nottingham Clean Champions scheme, to provide them with support and equipment.
'See the improvement'
He said: "He just makes such a difference.
"People on the school run used to avoid one side of the road due to the branches.
"I decided to give up an hour of my time on Thursday to help Bill, helping to pick up branches, sweep up the leaves, carry the buckets.
"A lot of areas could do with that little bit of TLC before it gets bad.
"It's an amazing job he does and you can really see the improvement."
Nottingham City Council was approached for a comment.
