Man arrested after death of woman in Edinburgh

A man has been arrested after a 78-year-old woman died in Edinburgh following an incident with a weapon on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services were called out to a house in the city's Fernieside Crescent about 08:25, with the woman pronounced dead at the scene.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death and inquiries continue.

BBC Scotland News understands "gunshot" sounds which locals reported hearing were a Police Scotland tactic used to access the property, and that no one was shot.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said the matter was "an isolated incident."

The force added that officers will remain in the area to provide public reassurance and anyone concerned about the incident should contact Police Scotland.
