A £200,000 project for new padel tennis courts is the first to receive funding from a Government of Jersey scheme for businesses.

Four panoramic double padel courts are being built at Les Ormes resort in St Brelade, with the project due to be finished by the end of May.

It has been supported by a £75,000 Better Business grant from the government.

Interest is growing in the racquet sport in the Channel Islands, with one club in Guernsey reporting a 40% rise in memberships since 2023.

'Growing sports scene'

The sport was invented in Mexico in the 1960s, according to the Lawn Tennis Association.

Jersey is playing host to a LTA seniors tour this summer.

Les Ormes general manager Nathan Maguire said the new courts "contribute to Jersey's growing sports scene" and offered people a chance to get together and boost their wellbeing.

He said the sport was suitable for players of all levels and hoped it would attract both holidaymakers and islanders.
