A criminal investigation has been launched after a "significant amount" of seized drugs were removed from a police station in the east of the country, gardaí (Irish police) have said.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ said the drugs, believed to be cannabis and with an estimated street value of six figures, were discovered missing on Wednesday.

The drugs, which would have been stored in a secure part of the station, are believed to have been seized at the end of 2023 as part of an ongoing investigation.

Gardaí said enquiries are ongoing and no further information was available.
