An MP who popped the question in the House of Commons says he and his partner "couldn't be happier".

Josh Babarinde, the MP for Eastbourne, proposed to his partner Connor after official business had finished for the day.

The Liberal Democrat, who has represented his home town in East Sussex since July last year, says he planned the surprise proposal after securing permission from the Commons' Speaker.

Babarinde says he and Connor "will never forget" their engagement day.

He said: "A big thank you to Mr Speaker and the team in parliament for helping to make this happen, together with fellow Sussex [Chichester] MP Jess Brown-Fuller, who helped me plan an unforgettable marriage proposal!"

Babarinde says it was "so special to ask a personal question" in the House of Commons, having asked hundreds as Eastbourne's MP.
