Homes plan for derelict 17th Century pub

The Beacon in Telford could be turned into nine flats under the plans, with more on the car park

A derelict 17th-Century pub and hotel could be turned into homes after plans were lodged with the local authority.

A planning application submitted to Telford and Wrekin Council proposes to convert The Beacon in Madeley into nine flats, with seven more on the car park.

The Grade II listed building on the edge of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage site has been empty for nearly five years and has fallen into a state of disrepair.

The former owners were issued with an urgent works notice last year but have since sold the property.

The application said the plans were the best way to ensure the long-term preservation of the listed building.

In a design and access statement, Ian Malyan from FOB Design said on behalf of the applicants: “The proposals seek to maintain the essential character and heritage significance of the property whilst minimising harm to its special interest.”

He added the plans would secure the building’s “essential value” for future generations.

Proposals previously emerged in 2019 to turn the site into hot food takeaways and apartments but they were withdrawn.
