A man broke his ankle when he jumped out of a second-storey window in a block of flats while trying to escape a fire, which police suspect to be arson.

Leicestershire Police said no-one but the man, in his 40s, had been injured in the blaze at Thorpe House in Countesthorpe Road, South Wigston, just before 20:00 GMT on Friday.

Officers believe the fire was started deliberately at the bottom of the ground floor stairs.

Anyone with any information about the suspected arson attack is asked to contact the force.

Det Con Kevin Sharkey said: "This is a main entrance and exit point for the occupants and it is luckily no-one was seriously injured or trapped as a result.

"It is also thanks to colleagues in the fire service that the flames were quickly contained and the fire didn't spread any further and cause damage to people's homes."
