Carols and samba music boost fire fundraiser

Carol singers, samba bands and bake sales have all helped raise money to support a community devastated by a fire.

One person died and another was injured in the blaze in Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria, in December, with more than 100 homes and 84 businesses also affected.

So far, £90,800 has been raised for the appeal launched by the Cumbria Community Foundation to support those left homeless by the disaster, or whose business or job was lost.

The foundation's director of programme and partnerships Dr Jenny Benson said the funds were being donated to "those most in need".

The appeal was launched with a donation of £50,000 from Westmorland and Furness Council and has been added to by individuals, community fundraising events, local groups, businesses and charities.

So far £87,500 has been awarded to support 83 households.

Fundraising efforts

A group from Hutton Roof village and members of Capernwray Evangelical Church both raised money by carol singing in their areas, while the Drum Nation samba band busked to boost donations.

Students at the Queen Elizabeth School and QEStudio in Kirkby Lonsdale held a "wear something festive" day and a cake sale in aid of the appeal.

The Cumbria Freemasons and charities including the Francis Scott Trust and the Frieda Scott Trust have all donated, along with local businesses.

The Francis Scott Trust's chair of trustees Steve Curl said he was shocked and saddened by the disaster.

"To all of those affected, please know that you are in our thoughts both now and in the days and months ahead. We are pleased to be able to support you," he said.

Organisers hope to raise a total of £150,000.
