A husband and wife from Hull say pure love has kept them together through 70 years of marriage.

Harry Brumhead, 92, and his wife Rose, 89, are celebrating their platinum wedding anniversary have met through friends when they were just 19 and 17.

They went on to marry in a Catholic church ceremony in the city on 6 August 1955.

The couple, who have three children, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, say there is no secret to their long, happy marriage but put it down to "getting on" together.

Harry said: "We just love each other, that's all there is to it. We've just got on all the time.

"We've had our ups and downs like anybody, but we've always made up. We're no different to anybody else."

Mr Brumhead recalled how he fell in love after Mrs Brumhead surprised him with a concert ticket.

"I remember she was very poor and she bought me a ticket to see the singer David Whitfield and that was it," he said.

Mrs Brumhead added: "I've always loved him ever since being young and that will never change. He's been a good husband to me. He's very generous."

The couple marked the anniversary at a party with family and friends.

They received congratulations from King Charles and Queen Camilla in the post and described it as a "nice surprise".

Mr Brumhead, a former fish dock worker, said: "It's so nice to get two cards from royalty."

The couple's daughter, 58-year-old Jane Brumhead, said people were full of admiration for her mum and dad.

"All the grandchildren say how much they look up to their nanna and grandad. Even people on the estate where they live comment on how cute they are together.

"Everyone admires them because they have stuck together for 70 years. They've had their ups and downs but they've just got through it. I'm so proud."
