Rail lines at Ulverston flooded at the weekend

  • Published

A train line has been closed until Friday due to flooding caused by Storm Bert.

Northern said its services between Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria and Lancaster are expected to be disrupted throughout the week due to problems in the Ulverston area.

The line will not be served by trains until Friday morning, the operator said, however a bus replacement service will run in both directions.

Network Rail said teams were working to clear the debris on the track.

Engineers attended the site at Ulverston last week to stem the flow of a stream which had found its way on to the railway, but on Saturday melting snow overwhelmed the watercourse and flooded the tracks.

About 240 tonnes of earth has already been removed from the tracks and a permanent repair will be carried out as soon as possible, Network Rail said.
