A 28-year-old rugby player has died after collapsing at a half marathon.

Jon Devereux, from Chester, was taking part in the Great Bristol Run on Sunday, 11 May, when he collapsed and had to receive medical treatment.

He later died in hospital, the Great Bristol Run company confirmed. The cause of death will be determined after a medical examination.

Mr Devereux played rugby for Chester RUFC. The club said in a statement: "Jon was a talented athlete who played senior rugby for Chester, and his energy, spirit, and sportsmanship left a lasting impression on all who knew him. His sudden loss has deeply affected our members and the wider sporting community."

Mr Devereux's journey with Chester RUFC began in 2002 as an Under-6 player.

He progressed through all levels of Junior Rugby and represented Chester's Senior Teams on numerous occasions.

"His love for the game extended beyond our club, as he continued to play during his travels," Chester RUFC said.

"Jon was the very definition of a thoroughly nice guy, someone who left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path. The outpouring of tributes across social media today stands as testament to the impact he had on our rugby community and beyond."

The Great Bristol Run company added: "The entire team involved in organising the Great Bristol Run extends their heartfelt condolences to Mr Devereux's family and friends."
