Nine out of 10 islanders still regularly drink Guernsey milk, according to a new survey, external.

Island Global Research surveyed 2,400 people about their attitudes to dairy products, on behalf of Guernsey Dairy.

A large majority of people supported the industry, with 92% who said local dairy farming should continue and 88% who stated the island's dairy products were "excellent".

Andrew Tabel, managing director of Guernsey Dairy, said the survey gave it "a thorough insight" into consumer trends and "the high regard Guernsey Dairy products are held in but also the general views of Islanders on maintaining a dairy farming industry on the island".

Only 15% of people were unhappy with controls restricting milk from outside Guernsey, even though this meant paying a premium, and 18% said Guernsey milk was poor value for money.

More than one in three households drink non-dairy milk, up slightly from 2019.

Eight out of ten households eat butter, with 83% of those preferring Guernsey butter.

New products

The dairy said lactose-free milk, which it introduced two years ago, had "built a loyal following", with 60% of households who drink lactose-free milk choosing the local product.

The dairy said it would introduce other new products in future.

Mr Tabel said: "We have already begun developing a spreadable Guernsey Dairy butter using a blend of different ingredients as well as a range of new premium ice cream flavours to complement the existing range of family favourites."
