Mixed forecast predicted for Glastonbury Festival
- Published
Glastonbury Festival goers can expect the weather to remain “largely dry and cloudy” for the next few days, but there could be some rain.
About 220,000 people are set to descend on Pilton, Somerset, as the gates officially opened for this year’s five-day event earlier.
The Glastonbury area will see average temperatures ranging from between 25C and 27C on Wednesday, 20C on Thursday, before dropping to 18C on Friday.
However, the weather is set to warm up again over the weekend, with average temperatures forecast between 20C and 21C, according to the BBC weather forecast.
Festivities will be getting underway across the 900-acre site before the music begins on the main Pyramid Stage on Friday, with Dua Lipa, Coldplay and Sza set to headline.
This year’s event will see performances from a host of global stars including LCD Soundsystem, Little Simz and PJ Harvey.
BBC Points West weather forecaster, Ian Fergusson, said: "Wednesday sees temperatures reach the higher 20's, with plenty of strong sunshine, and just a low risk of an isolated shower later in the afternoon.
"However, Thursday will become an overall cloudier, cooler and breezier day as a weak cold front crosses Somerset. A temporary sprinkling of rain is possible but no great amounts.
"For Friday and the weekend, temperatures will remain in the upper teens to perhaps low 20's, with cooler, fresher nights.
"Mostly dry, with some light rain possible later Saturday into early Sunday. However, overall rain amounts will be low for this year's event and the forecast remains pretty positive."
Staying safe
CEO of Phoenix Health and Safety, Nick Higginson, has urged festival-goers to drink plenty of water in order to avoid dehydration.
He said: “Being outdoors in the heat can be physically demanding, especially if you’re on your feet dancing.
“If you combine this with drinking alcohol, it can easily lead to exhaustion.”
Throughout the festival, there will be a mix of low and high UV levels.
To prevent dehydration or sunstroke, weather experts are advising festival-goers to wear sun cream, hats, seek shade and drink plenty of water.
