Semi-retired man celebrates £1m EuroMillions win

A self-described "semi-retired" man, who has played the lottery for several years, has won a £1m jackpot.

The man, from Reading, scooped the EuroMillions Millionaire Maker top prize in a draw in May this year, after buying a ticket at a local shop.

The Berkshire local said his success was "fantastic news", adding that he planned to celebrate "with a nice meal".

He had automatically been enrolled in the competition after buying a ticket for the regular EuroMillions draw, the National Lottery said.

Summing up the moment he found out he won, he said: "I checked my ticket on the app and was shocked when I saw that I had won the Millionaire Maker prize."

Andy Carter, from Allwyn - the operator of the National Lottery - said the win was "incredible for this lucky man from the Reading area".

"What a life-changing moment it must have been for him when he realised that he is now £1m richer - we hope he enjoyed his celebratory meal," he added.

The National Lottery, which was founded in the mid-1990s, has raised more than £50bn for charitable causes since it started.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports art and sport groups, community causes and the preservation of landmarks across the country, stating it has donated £460m to more than 24,100 projects since 1994.
