A section of a local rail service has been closed over the weekend.

Lineside management work will be carried out on the Tyne and Wear Metro on Saturday and Sunday.

The work means no trains will run between Pelaw and South Shields during the two days.

Operator Nexus said a replacement bus service would be in operation to take people to the affected stations.

A representative said the services would be off until about 18:50 BST on Sunday.

A seven-day line closure to allow for overhead line replacements has also been announced between Benton and North Shields from Monday.
