Gifts donated to the Christmas Sparkle Project

A project which gives presents to children living in difficult circumstances says there has been a rise in demand during the cost of living crisis.

The Christmas Sparkle Project works with charities and organisations to support families in and around Taunton, Somerset.

Last year, it gave out 2,260 parcels to families, up almost 50% on 2021.

The project's founder Gill Harrison said: "The cost of living crisis means the project has grown enormously and we know there are more people needing help."

Gifts can be donated at locations across Taunton and Wellington

The idea for the project came after a friend told Ms Harrison about two young girls who were thrilled when they received a foil wrapped chocolate coin as their first and only Christmas present.

This year, around 700 presents are needed for young people aged 13 to 18, but the group says it is a long way off its target.

Ms Harrison added: "We would be very grateful for any kind of toiletry sets, hats and gloves and stationery for this age group."
