A bomb squad has been called to a Warwickshire town after an object was removed from a river.

Drivers were warned to avoid parts of Leamington Spa after the object, thought to be a "historic device" was removed and officers were called, Warwickshire Police said.

"Willes Road in Leamington is closed from Newbold Terrace to Mill Road and motorists are asked to avoid the area," the force said.

Officers said on X they were waiting for an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team which would assess the item.

Residents reported hearing a loud bang at about 17:10 BST on Tuesday while the road was closed.

Some drivers reported being delayed by diversions which were put in place around the area.
