The owner of a historic pub near the River Severn in a protected part of Shropshire has applied for permission to alter a refurbishment scheme.

The Brewery Inn, Coalport High Street, sits in the Ironbridge Gorge Unesco World Heritage Site where there are strict planning rules.

Work is currently being carried out on the pub ahead of its eventual reopening and owner Severn View Brewers Ltd has applied to make some changes to the design of a screen and a rear door.

Last year, the pub was granted permission for extensions, holiday accommodation and changes to the layout of the Grade II listed property.

Three applications have been lodged. The first to change the conditions, external of previous approval, the second to seek full planning permission, external, and a third for listed building consent, external.

Shrewsbury-based architect Corey Waters said the proposals represented a "significant overall improvement" and Historic England advised the "best way to conserve a building is to keep it in use, or to find an appropriate new use if it has passed out of use".

The architect also said in a heritage statement that the public body advised against an "unreasonable, inflexible approach" and encouraged a "reasonable and proportionate approach to owners' needs".

Public consultation is ongoing.
