A driver towing a trailer who hit speeds of 100mph as he was being pursued by police has been arrested.

North Yorkshire Police officers became suspicious of the black BMW, which was driving at speed along the A64, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Officers pursued the vehicle on the A19 towards Escrick, and the car momentarily stopped to abandon the suspected stolen trailer in the middle of the A163.

It was brought to a stop near North Duffield and the driver, a 35-year-old man, and the passenger, a 23-year-old woman, were searched and police said Class A drugs were found.

The abandoned trailer was later recovered by police, who believed it to be a trailer tent stolen from the York area.

The man was arrested on suspicion of possessing Class A drugs, failing to stop for the police, theft, dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen for testing and drug driving.

Officers said he remains in police custody, while the woman was released without charge.
