Work to build 180 homes on council-owned land in Devon is set to begin in 2025.

In November 2017, North Devon Council was awarded £2.2m from the Brownfield Land Release Fund for the residential development at the Seven Brethren site next to the River Taw in Barnstaple.

The council said planning permission and funding was now in place to begin building the 125 family homes and 55 flats.

Due for completion in 2028, the homes will be built in several phases with a large number of the 54 affordable properties expected to be built first.

Leisure centre demolished

Also on the the land, a 328-space car park and temporary travellers’ site are nearing completion, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

New flood defences include a wall and embankment along the boundary of the site, while the homes will be raised above predicted flood levels.

Ahead of building, the old North Devon Leisure Centre has been demolished and the concrete reused in the construction of the car park.

Trees which have been removed have been chipped up and used in landscaping.
