Oscar and Bafta-winning costume designer John Bright has opened a learning hub for filmmaking in Hastings.

The Benbow Arts Space was launched by The Bright Foundation, an arts education charity established by Mr Bright, whose own career in the industry spans more than 50 years.

The charity is aiming to open the world of filmmaking to young people.

The venue, located in St Leonards-on-Sea, was partly funded by the sale of a shirt worn by actor Colin Firth in the BBC's Pride and Prejudice.

The garment was among costumes designed by Mr Bright which were auctioned for charity in March.

It went under the hammer for £20,000 - double the amount expected.

The buyer's premium of £5,000 took the total to £25,000.

The Bright Foundation is aiming to give young people an opportunity to discover the world of filmmaking, develop skills and potentially begin a journey into the industry.

Polly Risbridger, the charity's chief executive, said: "We want to be an inspirational starting point for young people on their journeys."

The foundation has a decorated list of ambassadors, including actress Dame Judi Dench, who said: "You’ve (John Bright) always been so good at your job. I have no doubt that everything else will be just as brilliant."

Actor Stephen Fry added: "The creative arts are for everyone and I’m so proud to be an ambassador for this magical idea".

The Benbow Arts Space will hold activities for young people aged 11 and above and include school and group visits.
