New weather warning as snow and ice shuts schools

Snow and icy conditions are expected to continue into Friday after about 30 schools were forced to shut due to the cold weather.

The Met Office issued a new weather warning across Wales for snow and ice between 12:00 GMT on Thursday and 10:00 on Friday.

Schools in Denbighshire, Conwy and Wrexham stayed shut on Thursday - the third day of closures and travel problems due to freezing cold temperatures.

The forecaster said some roads and railways were likely to be affected, with longer journey times by road, bus and train.

Ice is the main reason for the closures, with some schools in Conwy saying they would re-evaluate the situation throughout the day.

Wales saw its first snowfall of the season on Monday, resulting in rail and road disruption across Wales.

There are four weather warnings in place across the UK, three for snow and ice and one for ice.

Forecasters have warned people to continue to take care when travelling.

Cold northerly winds will continue through the end of the week across much of the UK, according to the Met Office.

By the weekend, the cold air is set to be replaced by milder south-westerly winds with potentially wet and very windy weather sweeping in.
