Man dies in crash during M62 police chase

Junction 29 remained closed at midday on Saturday with congestion in the westbound carriageway

A man has died and a section of the M62 was closed for several hours after a car crashed during a police chase.
The driver failed to stop for officers near junction 29 on the eastbound carriageway just before 01:00 BST on Saturday when his vehicle hit barriers as he tried to take the exit slip road, West Yorkshire Police said.
The man, in his 30s, was the only person in the black Mercedes C220 and died at the scene, officers said.
The M62 eastbound was closed for much of the day between junctions 28 and 29, where it meets the M1 at Lofthouse.
Police said the man's next of kin had been informed and were receiving support from specialist officers.
The incident has been referred to the Independent Officer for Police Conduct and the organisation will carry out an independent investigation.
