A popular paddling pool on Brighton seafront, given a reprieve from closure, has reopened.

Kings Road Pool had looked likely to remain closed for the summer holidays as urgent repairs were needed and planned work on the seafront arches at Madeira Terrace would have impacted the site.

But funding for repair works was green-lit by Brighton & Hove City Council after a related project was delayed until later in the year.

Councillor Alan Robins said: "It's a fantastic resource and provides somewhere free where families can spend the day, make lifelong memories and, hopefully, enjoy the good weather this summer."

The council confirmed the pool had reopened on Monday.

Work on the A259 arches has been delayed until later in the year so as not to cause disruption during the busy summer months.

The council said Kings Road pool was approaching the end of its usable life and would need further work.

"Long term, we will consult with residents about exactly what they would like on the site once the A259 arches work is complete, but for now I'm just pleased families will be able to enjoy visiting the site again," added Councillor Trevor Muten, cabinet member for transport and city infrastructure.

A council spokesperson said the Kings Road pool would reopen "once staff have had time to make sure chlorine levels have the reached the recommended balance and the water is safe to play in".

The city's other paddling pools in Saunders Park and Hove Lagoon, and the water feature at The Level, are all currently open to enjoy, the spokesperson added.
