A story about a mum who was arrested and held in a police cell after her baby son's birthmarks were mistaken for bruising was among our most read this week in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

The mother of a six-month-old baby said she was treated "like a criminal" after her son's birthmarks were mistaken for bruising.

Laxmi Thapa's son was born with blue spot - blue-grey markings common on babies with brown or black skin.

After being referred to hospital in Basingstoke she was arrested when medical staff and police followed procedures for suspected child abuse.

Campaigners have called for better awareness of the condition and said misdiagnosis can be "devastating" for wrongly accused families.

Braverman sparks outrage after LGBTQ+ flag comments

Rishi Sunak faced calls to expel Suella Braverman from the Conservative Party following remarks she made about an LGBTQ+ flag.

Ms Braverman, MP for Fareham and Waterlooville in Hampshire, criticised the flying of the Progress Pride flag at the Home Office in comments that some found offensive.

Designed in 2018, the flag was created to represent people of colour in the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the trans community and those living with HIV/Aids.

Casey Byrne, a former Conservative candidate for Reading Borough Council and LGBTQ+ campaigner, said Braverman should be "expelled" for the comments she made at the National Conservatism Conference in the United States.

Large fire closes M275 motorway overnight

Smoke was seen billowing across the carriageway

A key motorway in Hampshire was closed overnight as a result of a large fire at a waste processing plant.

The M275 into and out of Portsmouth was shut in both directions on Saturday, 6 July as a result of "thick, black smoke" from the blaze at TJ Waste & Recycling, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said.

The force said the smoke made driving conditions unsafe and urged people to avoid the area.

Boy, 16, arrives at school prom on hovercraft

Josh said he arrived to "cheering and smiling"

A teenage boy shocked his friends by arriving at his Year 11 prom on a hovercraft.

Sixteen-year-old Josh used the unusual method of transport to arrive at the event at St Mary's Stadium in Southampton, Hampshire, on Friday 5 July.

His mum, Marie, said their family had been racing hovercrafts for "years and years", and Josh was "born into it".

Josh said it was "quite cool", adding: "It was such good fun just to see everyone go 'wow, look at that'."

Lost WW1 trenches given historical protection

The trenches were rediscovered at the Ministry of Defence's Browndown site in 2011

First World War practice trenches that were lost beneath heathland for decades have been granted heritage protection by the government.

The rare site in Browndown in Gosport, Hampshire, was used for training troops between 1914 - 1918.

The practice battlefield was rediscovered in 2011 after it was spotted in an old aerial photo, external of the area.

Following advice from Historic England, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), it has been designated as a scheduled monument, external.
