Vacant pub could become women's community hub

The vacant pub could be turned into a community hub for women
- Published
A community hub for women is being proposed to replace a vacant pub in Barnstaple.
Encompass Southwest and North Devon Against Domestic Abuse (NDADA) want to provide a 'safe space' at The Watering Hole, Castle Street, for women facing domestic abuse and sexual violence.
The organisations have seen a rise in the number of women accessing both crisis and prevention support over the past three years, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The Watering Hole has been empty for several years and fallen into disrepair, planning documents say, external.
'Peer support'
Called "Brave Spaces", the community hub would also offer help and advice on homelessness, substance misuse, mental health, sexual health and support for women who have had children taken into care.
Plans submitted to North Devon Council include private consultation rooms and welfare facilities, emergency accommodation for women in crisis, a specialist referral centre for victims of sexual assault - currently only available in Exeter - and a quiet, secure courtyard for outdoor relaxation.
Documents say funds from a cafe would help its long term sustainability.
The centre would offer peer support, creative activities and personal development, according to planning submissions, and it could employ ten full-time and part-time people trained in trauma-informed care, safeguarding practices and supporting women.
Planning agent NPAS Architectural Services said changes to the building's layout would be minimal and would ensure the heritage of the building is conserved.
