Police are urging homeowners to beware of doorstep fraudsters posing as police officers after two elderly residents were targeted on Friday.

Lincolnshire Police said the incidents took place in Lincoln and one of the victims handed over thousands of pounds.

On both occasions, the residents were instructed to take money out of their bank and told that someone would come to collect the cash later.

The force said it was investigating both incidents. Police across the country have reported similar examples taking place in their areas.

In the first incident, police said the fraudsters claimed they needed the money for a Scotland Yard investigation. The resident did not give them any cash.

In the second, they said the victim was told they had fallen prey to a scam and needed to hand over their money for safekeeping.

The force said: "Police and your bank will never ask for your PIN, bank card, ask you to withdraw cash or buy items like gold bullion, jewellery and other high value goods on their behalf.

"They will also never ask you to verify your personal details by phone or offer to pick up cash or your bank card by courier."
