HIV-positive man attempted to rape teenager

A man who attempted to rape a vulnerable teenager in a "horrific sexually-motivated attack" has been jailed.
Alan Douglas Clune, 45, was HIV positive when he attacked an 18-year-old man in a hotel room, leaving him with "deep and lasting trauma."
Clune, of no fixed address, was on trial for rape at Bristol Crown Court and admitted attempted rape on the second day.
He has been given a 12-year extended sentence, consisting of nine years in prison and a further three years on licence.
"Because Clune is HIV positive and did not use protection, the victim in this case had to also endure a long and anxious wait before being given the all-clear," said Detective Sergeant Laura Wrighton from Avon and Somerset Police.
Police say the victim gave evidence at the trial which they believe resulted in Clune changing his plea.
"The victim has been extremely courageous in reporting the offence and supporting the prosecution's case," Det Sgt Wrighton said.
"We're forever grateful for his bravery which has seen a very dangerous offender given an extended sentence which will help protect the public from his destructive criminal behaviour."
Clune approached the 18-year-old man in Bristol city centre in the early hours of Wednesday 25 January, 2023.
The man went back to a hotel room where Clune carried out the attack.
"It's important to use this successful prosecution to urge victims of sexual offences to come forward," Det Sgt Wrighton added.
"You will be listened to and believed and we can help ensure you get any specialist advice and support you need."
