Man struck by car on New Year's Eve dies

A man who was struck by a car on a roundabout junction on New Year's Eve has died in hospital, police have said.

The pedestrian, aged in his 40s, was hit by a grey Nissan Qashqai in Sandown, Isle of Wight, at the junction of Avenue Road, High Street and Culver Parade shortly after 17:15 GMT.

The man from the seaside town was taken to St Mary's Hospital.

Police said a 73-year-old man from Brading was arrested at the time on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was released but remains under investigation.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said no further arrests have been made.

Anyone with information and witnesses who saw the pedestrian at the roundabout prior to the collision are being urged to contact police.
