A motorcyclist has been airlifted to hospital and a woman arrested following a crash in the Highlands.

The man was seriously injured when his bike and a grey car collided on the A9 two miles north of Latheron in Caithness at about 09:50 on Sunday.

He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by helicopter where he remains in a critical condition.

A woman was arrested and charged in connection with a road traffic offence, but was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.

Both the driver of the car and a passenger were also taken to hospital as a precaution, but were later released.

Police had closed the road for almost eight hours before it opened shortly after 17:00.

Sgt Neil MacDonald said an investigation into the crash was ongoing and encouraged anyone with dashcam footage to share it, external with officers.
