Two men have been arrested following a rape in York city centre on Wednesday morning.

North Yorkshire Police said the incident happened between 03:30 BST and 04:00 BST in the Piccadilly and North Street areas of the city.

A force spokesperson said the two men, aged 20 and 18, were arrested on suspicion of rape on Wednesday evening and remain in custody.

They added the victim was continuing to receive specialist support.

Police said the arrests were the result of an immediate and extensive investigation including CCTV and forensic examination.

Det Ch Insp Shaun Page said: "This is a shocking incident, and I understand it will have caused significant concern in the local community.

"Two suspects have now been arrested, and our enquiries are ongoing, so I would urge anyone who has information that could assist us to get in touch."

He said officers from the city's neighbourhood policing team would be on patrol in the city centre to provide "extra reassurance" to the public.
