The Homebase on Sainsbury's Way closed in January

Permission for a mixed goods discount store is being sought for the former Homebase site in Hessle, council documents show.

The store on Sainsbury's Way closed in January after the company went into administration.

The application seeks permission to widen the use and range of items that can be sold on the site.

The application will now be assessed by Hull City Council.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, permission is being sought to allow food and drink goods, pet food and supplies, toys, non- fashion clothing and footwear, books and stationary to be sold on the site.

The council documents state that the unit would be suitable for retailers such as B&M, Home Bargains, Poundstretcher, Poundland or The Range.

The potential of any of those retailers moving in is speculative at this point.

The documents suggest that if one of those retailers were to move into the site, it would not hinder other nearby stores.

The application stated: "Whilst it is acknowledged that a B&M and Poundland store are located within Hessle Road District Centre, these are smaller 'high street' format stores."

The application goes on to say: "At Kingston Retail Park alone there are three existing non-food mixed discount retailers trading successfully alongside one another."
