'Inspiring' athlete trains for Guinness records

A Yorkshire-based athlete is training for two Guinness World Record titles in endurance events that take place later this year.

Angus Leckonby, aged 22, has intellectual disabilities and is hoping to raise £10,000 for Special Olympics GB.

In April he will attempt to become the youngest and fastest male with an intellectual disability to complete a marathon when he competes in the London Marathon.

Then in September, he is aiming to break similar records during a two-mile swim at London's Swim Serpentine event.

Mr Leckonby, from Octon, near Driffield swims for four hours each week at Woodford Leisure Centre in Hull and is a member of the Special Olympics City of Hull and Scarborough Swim Club.

He is also a member of Yorkshire Wolds Runners and Wolds Triathlon Club, and is training for the marathon four times a week.

In addition to his intellectual disability, Angus is also autistic and lives with verbal dyspraxia.

His father, Matthew Leckonby has encouraged him to be involved in sport, which he said had played a big part in Angus' life for the last ten years.

"It's changed his life and proved to him that, despite his intellectual disability, he can compete alongside anyone at mainstream national competitions," he said.

Mr Leckonby said his son's ambition to achieve two Guinness World Records titles was "beyond inspiring".

Special Olympics GB said the funds raised by Angus would help the charity to continue to provide life-changing opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities across England, Scotland, and Wales.
